Tommy Lee Whetzel, age 50 of Upper Tract, WV passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at his home after a brief illness.
Tommy was born on January 18, 1974 in Petersburg, WV and was a son of the late Susan Louise (Whetzel) VanMeter. In addition to his mother, Tommy was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Gillispie “Pete” Nazelrodt, maternal grandmother, Margie Nazelrodt, his aunt Barbara Kimble and uncle Danny Nesselrodt.
Tommy is survived by his wife Sandra (Heavener) Whetzel; one son, Danny (Kayisha) VanMeter of Morgantown, WV; one grandson, Maverick VanMeter; step- father, Lester “Pete” (Rachel) VanMeter of Upper Tract, WV; step-father, Elwood Myers of Moorefield, WV; two sisters, Danielle (Dakota) Grogg of Maysville, WV and Jeannie Whetzel of Staunton, VA; special niece and nephew, Blakely and Braxton Grogg; special cousins, Timmy, Larry and Robert Evans; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friends, Ben Shreve, Ruth VanMeter and Alvy Humphreys.
Tommy’s career as a bricklayer construction worker was marked by a strong work ethic and attention to detail, which earned him respect within the construction community. Tommy was a man of the outdoors, with a passion for hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, mowing and gardening. He was a volunteer at Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Tommy’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, yet his legacy is one of love, laughter and the countless memories shared with friends and family.
Tommy’s family will receive friends Friday, May 31, 2024 from 6 – 8 PM at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 11 AM in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastors Allen and Barb Sisson officiating.
Interment will be in Whetzel Family Cemetery on Dumplin Run Road, Moorefield, WV.
