Robert John “Rob” Thompson, age 83 of Petersburg, WV passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.
Robert was born on September 26, 1941 in Riverton, WV and was a son of the late Roy Thompson and Iva Jane (Bennett) Thompson. In addition to his parents, Rob was preceded in death by one daughter, Melissa Sue Hott; two sisters, Ollie Judy and Donna Thompson and two brothers, Riley W. Thompson and Ivan R. Thompson.
Robert is survived by his wife Ellen Louise (Kimble) Thompson, one daughter, Rachel Louise Thompson, three grandchildren, Danielle Eubanks, Jesse A. Thompson and Rebecca Ann Thompson; five great grandchildren and two sisters, Susie Hicklin of Riverton, WV and Nancy Bergdoll of Durgon, WV.
Robert, known affectionately as "Rob" to his friends and family, graduated from Circleville High School in 1961. His service as an army veteran of the United States Army was a testament to his patriotism and strength of character. He was a member of Petersburg American Legion Post 78. After his military service, Robert built a career at Allied Egry in Petersburg for 28 years and later at Pilgrims Pride in Moorefield, WV. He attended Gordan Chapel United Methodist Church.
Robert's life outside of work was filled with joy and activities that spoke to his kind and nurturing spirit. As an avid gardener, he took pride in cultivating his land and always had an impressive garden to show for his efforts. Beyond his hobbies, Robert's true essence was that of a man who never met a stranger. With an open heart and an open door, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His friendly demeanor, his handy skills, and his thoughtful nature made him a beloved figure in his community.
Robert’s family will receive friends on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, June 9, 2025 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. David Webb officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with Military Honors by the Grant County Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Army Honor Guard.
