Ralph Gladen Layton, age 83 of Maysville, WV, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, while working on his farm. Ralph was born on March 28, 1942 in Pansy, WV and was a son of the late William Lee Layton and Zola Myrtle (Alt) Layton.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Lou (Long) Layton in 2014; four sisters, Myrtle Layton, Goldie Elosser, Bessie Champ and Wilma Lee Carr and three brothers, David L Layton, William Layton and Golden Layton. Ralph was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Ralph is survived by two sons, Ralph Joseph “Joe” Layton (Amber) of Maysville, WV and Larry L. Layton (Jamie) of Maysville, WV; one daughter, Lacie Lynn Layton of Beckley, WV; Six grandchildren, Olivia Layton, Eli Layton, Avalynn Geary, Landen Layton, Evan Mosman-Equerme and Dean Mosman-Equerme and numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph was a devoted husband and father; his children will forever cherish the lessons and love he imparted to them. His legacy will also live on through his grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as he taught them the importance of farming.
Ralph was a proud 1962 graduate of Petersburg High School. Ralph served as Deputy Assessor in Grant County in 1967. His commitment to his community led him to a distinguished career as an Assessor on July 1, 1976, a role he fulfilled with integrity until his well-deserved retirement on March 31, 2022, at the age of 80. Ralph was the longest serving assessor in West Virginia. Ralph was a member of Falls Assembly of God Church in Maysville, WV.
Ralph’s love for farming was a passion that connected him to the earth and the rhythms of nature. His hands were often found in the soil, tending to his crops and cattle and caring for the land that he loved so dearly. Those who knew Ralph will remember him for his friendly conversations, his gentle guidance and his thoughtful attention to the needs of others.
Ralph’s family will receive friends on Saturday, June 28, 2025 from 5:00 -8:00 PM at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at 2 PM at Falls Assembly of God Church, Maysville, WV with Pastor Samson Samuel officiating.
Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.
