Mary C. (Campbell) Harper

Mary C.  Harper of Moorefield, WV passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at her home.  She was born to Henry W. Campbell and Mary Virginia Stump Campbell on January 19, 1928, in Romney, WV.  Mary was married to Robert L. Harper who preceded her in 2009.  She was also preceded by one sister, Charlotte C. Lowe (John) and one nephew Thomas S. (Diana) Lowe.

Mary is survived by three children Katherine Harper of Saint Albans, WV, Mary Beth Combs (Ron), of Moorefield, WV, R.W. Harper also of Moorefield, a niece and a nephew.  She is also survived by three grandchildren Robert Morris (Ashley) of Charleston, WV, PJ (Phillip) Combs of Moorefield, WV and Virginia (Ginnie) Oglesby (Jesse) of Saint Albans, WV, and four great-grandchildren one of whom was very special to her Jesse Oglesby.

Mary received an AB in Physical Education from Mary Washington College and a master’s in education from WVU. She taught at Romney High School for several years before moving to Moorefield after marrying Robert. Mary was a member of Baker’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for over 60 years and often taught Bible School. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women/Women’s Society for Christian Service and sang in the choir. She was active beyond her church community as a member and office holder of the Durgon CEOS. She taught Physical Education and Health at Moorefield High during the late 60s and 70s. She was a poll worker at Tollgate school when it served as a polling site. Mary enjoyed being a farm wife and all the chores and responsibilities that came with that life such as gardening, canning and sewing. Her favorite hobby was reading. She was a voracious reader, and her favorite books were those of history of the British Isles. 

 Mary’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 11 AM till 12 PM at Baker’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Funeral service will begin at 12 Noon with Pastor Mike Funkhouser officiating. Interment will be in the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, WV.
