Martha L. (Sherman) Hartman

   Martha Lee Hartman, age 90 passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

  Martha was born on April 15, 1933 in Moorefield, WV and was a daughter of the late Brownley Homer Sherman and Ethel Virginia (Southerly) Sherman. 

  In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Olie J. Hartman; one son, Joseph L. “Whitey” Hartman, daughter-in-law, Anna Marie Hartman; three brothers, Lawrence Sherman, Daniel Sherman and Allen Sherman; and two sisters, Betty Barrett and Helen Coppe.

  Martha is survived by two sons, Dennis O. (Marcella) Hartman, Sr. of Petersburg, WV and Jeffrey M. (Lori) Hartman of Petersburg, WV; seven grandchildren, Dennis O. Hartman, Jr.,  Brandy (Adam)Kuykendall, Nathan Hartman, Wes Hartman, Kelli (Chase) Feaster, Kayla ( Remmington Rennix) Hartman and Brett Hartman; three step grandchildren, J. R. (Kimberly)Hinkle, Carla Dent and Whitney (Brittney) Hinkle; six great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; two brothers, Ronnie (Shirley) Sherman  of Moorefield, WV and Jimmy (Anna Mae) Sherman of Milam, WV; several nieces and nephews.

 Martha was a graduate of Moorefield High School.  After graduation she went to Washington, D.C. and was a telephone operator for several years and then returned to Petersburg and worked for Joan Curtis Manufacturing. Martha was a member of the Petersburg Memorial Covenant Brethren Church.   

 Martha’s passion was her family. She was known for her cooking, baking and canning. She was always busy crocheting things for her family. 

 In honoring Martha’s wishes her body will be cremated and services will be private.
