M. Joan Kuykendall Obituary

Mary Joan Kuykendall age 83 of Petersburg, WV passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Grant Memorial Hospital on Saturday, September 21, 2024. She was born March 24,1941 in Petersburg, WV to Daniel Bernard Mongold & Beatrice Elizabeth (Hall) Mongold.

She worked for Raygold, Boise Cascade and retired from American Woodmark in Moorefield, WV after 30+ years. She was a member of the Petersburg First Baptist Church.  She spent countless hours tending to her flowers, plants and vegetables, finding beauty in every bloom. Her green thumb brought joy not only to her own home but to those around her.

Joan found joy in her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and spending time with her family. She cherished every moment spent with them rather it be offering words of wisdom, sharing stories, or simply enjoying their laughter. Joan was fortunate to have the loving support of her family throughout her later years, especially from her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Matt who ensured she was surrounded by care and comfort. With deep gratitude, the family acknowledges the dedicated caregivers who, with compassion and kindness, helped care for Joan. Their support, along with Marlene and Matt’s unwavering devotion, provided immense comfort and allowed Joan to spend her final days with dignity and grace, surrounded by love.

She was preceded in death by her parents Daniel & Beatrice Mongold, daughter Alice Catherine (Cathy) Pritt, sisters Donna Mongold, Anges Hedrick, Gladys Cooper, Joyce Delawder, Carol (Beck) Swick, and Janet McGee; an infant brother Daniel Mongold.

Surviving is one daughter Marlene (Matt) Evans of Petersburg, WV, and grandchildren Chasity (David) McKenzie of Keyser, WV Stephanie (Jamie) Barger of Petersburg, WV Angela (Derek) Green of Stevensville, Maryland, Scott (Crystal) Kuykendall of Petersburg, WV, Hunter (Kayla) Evans of Moorefield, WV, and Tyler (Kaitlin) Evans of Petersburg and many great and great-great grandchildren and fury companion “BO.” Also surviving are two sisters Diane (Ebb) Smith of Petersburg, WV and Phyllis Hedrick of Stephens City, Virginia and many nieces and nephews.
