Larry Wayne VanMeter, age 70 of Petersburg, WV passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at his home while under the care of Grant Memorial Hospice.
Larry was born on February 23, 1955 in Petersburg, WV and was a son of the late Thelma (VanMeter) Chapman. In addition to his mother, Larry was preceded in death by his wife Wendy (Whetzel) VanMeter in 2008 and one son, Donnie “Boonie” Whetzel.
Larry is survived by his companion, Hellen “Sissy” Bean; two daughters Barbara Shook of Cumberland, MD and Teresa Myers (Tim) of Moorefield, WV; four grandchildren, Whisper Starkey (John), Carmen Taylor (Daniel), Floyd Shook and Timothy “Tub” Myers; one great grandson, Liam Taylor; one sister, Karen Keplinger (Paul) of Arthur, WV and several nieces and nephews.
Larry attended Petersburg High School and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Petersburg American Legion Post 78. Larry was a logger and truck driver for Huffman Logging. He was a member of Cornerstone Family Fellowship in Petersburg.
An avid outdoorsman, Larry found solace and joy in motorcycle riding, hunting and fishing. His love for these activities was contagious, and he often shared his passion with friends and family, creating lasting memories on the trails, in the woods and by the water.
Larry’s family will receive friends on Monday from 10 -11 AM at Cornerstone Family Fellowship in Petersburg, WV. A funeral service will begin at 11 AM with Pastor P. J. Landis officiating. Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV with military honors by Grant County Veterans Honor Guard.
