John retired from Columbia Gas Transmission on June 1, 1991 after 39 ½ years. He continued to work pipeline construction as supervisor for Carl E. Smith, Pace Pipeline, Murphy Brothers, ST Pipeline and others for 15 years, plus building bridges in Grant, Hardy and Pendleton Counties in his “free time”, which are still being used.
John was a superb sportsman and enjoyed the outdoors. He liked talking with his pipeline buddies about their pipeline adventures and loved sharing his hunting and fishing stories to anyone that would listen. It is our firm belief that if the spinal stenosis had not taken the use of his legs, he still would have been climbing those mountains and working pipeline.
A special thank you to Sara Ours and Donna Sullivan for your loving care you gave to our father, you were “those women” to him, whom he cared for so much and helped us to be able to keep him at home as long as we did. Drs. Steve Thompson and Dewey Bensenhaver for the care you gave him over the years. To the staff at Grant Rehabilitation Center, all his aides and nurse that called him “pap”, your care and dedication to keeping him comfortable are greatly appreciated. Dr. Innis at Grant Memorial Hospital Emergency Room on Wednesday night, the care and concern plus follow-up calls are greatly appreciated.
