Jean Marie (Elrick) DiGiustino, age 91, of Mt. Storm, WV., died at home on Monday, Oct 7, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born September 24, 1928 in Cumberland, MD, the youngest child of John Edwin Elrick and Alverda Leora (Oates) Elrick. After graduating from Bayard High School, she attended Potomac State College and Fairmont State University to train as a teacher. Many of the students who passed through her classrooms at Mt. Storm Grade School and Union Elementary School remained in touch until the end of her life.
Those who loved her will remember her as warm, wise, and quick-witted. Throughout her life, Jean took great pleasure in reading, gardening, and playing music. Though she would modestly disagree, she baked the best angel food cake anyone tasting it had ever eaten. Her family meant everything to her, as did she to them.
Jean was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Charles DiGiustino; her siblings, Donald E. Elrick, John R. Elrick, and Doris K. Mathews; and her lifelong friend Phyllis Ganyu.
Surviving her are three daughters: Linda Sabak and husband Andrew, of Fairmont, WV.; Michele Hanlin and husband Terry, of Mt. Storm, WV.; and Beth DiGiustino, of Latrobe, PA; three grandchildren: Ben Hanlin and wife Cassie of Petersburg, WV.; Nina Sabak of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Michael Hanlin of Morgantown, WV; and two great-grandchildren: Joseph and Marshall Hanlin of Petersburg, WV. Close friend Ellen Hanlin and Jean’s beloved cat, Jethro, also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Grant Memorial Home Care and Grant Memorial Hospice, and especially to Suenette Barr and Wendy Harvey.
All arrangements are private and entrusted to the care of the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, WV. Memorial contributions may be made to the Garrett County Animal Shelter or the Allegheny Mountain Top Library.
