J. Ross Nestor Obituary

 

Junior Ross Nestor, age 90 of Petersburg, WV passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg.

Ross was born on December 13, 1933, in Rowlesburg, WV and was a son of the late Waitman Parker Nestor and Flossie Laura (Robinson) Nestor.  In addition to his parents, Ross was preceded in death by his wife Adeline Marie (Compton) Nestor in 2022 and one brother Harold Nestor.

Ross is survived by three step- daughters Pamela Heckler of Petersburg, WV, Sharon VanMeter (David P. VanMeter IV) of Petersburg, WV and Heather Houston of Stroudsburg, PA; four step – grandchildren David P. VanMeter V (Alex) of Dayton, VA, Amanda Alt (Cliff) of Timberville, VA, Dustin VanMeter of Fort Meade, MD and Jessie White of  Honey Brook, PA, three step-great grandchildren, Madelynn Alt, Isabelle Alt and Silas VanMeter; two sisters, Betty Nestor Moran of New Cumberland, WV and Maxine Nestor Smith (Robert) of  Morgantown, WV; four brothers, Paul Nestor (Gloria) of Dayton, Ohio,  Dennis L. Nestor (Lila Jo) of Bridgeport, WV, Harry L. Lewis of Baltimore, MD and Darl Nestor (Marlene) of Rowlesburg, WV. Also surviving several nieces and nephews.

In Ross’s junior year of high school, he began working part- time at the local (Rowlesburg) A & P Store. He continued to work there after graduating, working himself up to assistant manager and then finally manager. Ross eventually was transferred from the Rowlesburg A&P, and worked at Parsons, Kingwood, and Grafton. His position led him to Meyersdale, PA. Eventually, A&P transferred Ross and his family to Petersburg, WV. Ross was well known in the community, as a dedicated manager, patient and caring with customers. He worked for A&P, and then as it became Super Fresh, for over 42 years.  He retired in 1998. He was also active in the community. He volunteered for the Grant Memorial Auxiliary for many years, serving as vice president and president. In the late 1970’s, Ross was elected to the city council of Petersburg, where he served. He helped to organize the starting of the Grant County Farmers Market.  He was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.

Ross’s family will receive family and friends on Sunday, October 27, 2024 from Noon till 2 PM. Funeral service will begin at 2 PM in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Henson officiating.  Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg, WV.

Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 102 North Main Street, Petersburg, WV or Gideons International.
