J. Kitridge "Kit" Groves

Mr. John Kitridge ”Kit” Groves of Maysville, WV passed away at his home on Friday September 2, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Cumberland, Md June 8, 1943, to John H. and Norma A. Groves.

Mr. Groves Graduated from Augusta Military Academy at Fort Defiance, VA in 1961. He then enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in Amarillo, TX. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Petersburg and joined his parents in the family business at Groves Oil & Supply. After selling the business, he was employed by the WV Department of Highways at the county and district levels until his retirement in 2003. Mr. Groves was a lifelong farmer and steward of the land. He was awarded WV Conservation Farmer of the Year on two separate occasions.

Mr. Groves was a staunch Republican and Methodist by faith. He was an active member of Grove St. United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent as did his father and grandfather before him. He served his community as a member of the Republican Executive Committee and Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his loving wife and companion of 60 years, Dixie Lee Groves of Maysville WV. Two devoted daughters, Belinda Groves Watkins of Waynesboro, VA, and Holly Groves Alt (Wes) of Petersburg, WV. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jonathan Q. Watkins, Taryn B. Watkins, Patrick R. Chapman II, Joseph B. Chapman, and Abigail G. Alt as well as two great-grandchildren, Ursula M. Chapman, and Kyan Z. Chapman. He is also survived by 3 Sisters, Kathy E. Kimble (Chuck), Jayne H. Monroe (Doug) and Jennifer L. Mann (Ward), devoted family friend Donna Sullivan, and Furry friend Benson “Little Rascal”.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Grove Street United Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Hakes and Pastor Calvin Redman officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 AM  till time of service  at 11:00 AM.
