Harold Delmar George, Sr., age 94 of  Maysville, passed away at his son’s residence in Petersburg on February 17, 2021, under the care of Hospice.

Born November 5, 1926 in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Pearl Eston & Ella Kathryn (Kuykendall) George. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Cecil Lois “Cissy” George and two infant sons.

He is survived by his second wife of nearly 30 years, Claudia Hope Rexrode George. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James, Ernest “Satchel,” Merlin “Midge” and Clifton “Joe” George, and his one sister, Evelyn George Self.

Mr. George enlisted in the US Navy when he was 15 by lying about his date of birth and served on the boat, USS LCI(G) 726 in the Pacific during WW2 making 6 beach landings in the Philippines. He served in the Navy six years before returning to WV. He worked for Celanese, Pepsi Cola Bottling, Southern States, O’Sullivan Rubber and retired from Rockingham Poultry Hatchery Division. In retirement he worked for the US Forest Service and Judy’s Drug Store. He also was formerly a member of the American Legion John M. Golliday Post 64. He enjoyed sports and his family. He was the oldest son and took his responsibilities seriously.

 Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Gonzalez, his son Pastor Harold D. George, Jr. (Cheryl), his grandchildren Daniel Gonzalez (Jen Shimp), Julia Gonzalez (Awbrey McIntosh), and Jessica George, as well as his great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Caydence and Keegan Gonzalez, Hector Vasquez Jr and Awbrey McIntosh, III, and Liam George. Also surviving are stepchildren Danny (Lora) Mitters, Sharon (Gale) Merritt, Doug (Ellen) Rexrode, Donald (Debra) Rexrode, Sheila Williamson, Suenette (Joshua) Kuykendall, and many grand and great- grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his brothers Junior George, Donald George and Otha George and many nieces and nephews.

 Services will be held at Schaeffer Funeral Home on Monday, February 22, 2021, at 9:00 AM with Pastor Ted Anderson officiating.  Friends and Family will be received at Schaeffer funeral home on Sunday, February 21, 2021, from 2 to 6 PM at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Internment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg with Military Honors by Petersburg VFW Post 6454 and United States Navy Honor Guard.
