Florina "Polly" S. (Barger) Vance

 Florina Susan “Polly” Vance, age 79 of Maysville, WV passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at Mountain Memories Assisted Living in Elkins, WV.

 Polly was born on March 5, 1946 in Jordan Run, WV and was a daughter of the late Arthur George Barger and Lucy Irene (Goldizen) Barger.  In addition to her parents, Polly was preceded in death by three brothers, Harlan Barger, Donald Barger and Verlin Barger.

 Polly is survived by her husband of 54 years, Harold R. Vance; one son, Matthew Vance of Maysville, WV and one daughter, Robin Ketterman of Maysville, WV; four grandchildren, David Vance, Austin Vance, Aaron Ketterman and Evan Ketterman.  One sister, Rosalie Mongold of Maysville, WV; two brothers, Wendell (Eileen) Barger of Dorcas, WV and Roger (Rettie) Barger of Maysville, WV; three sisters-in-law, Velda Barger, Judy Belle Barger and Janice Barger and several nieces and nephews.

Polly’s early years were spent in the rustic charm of a one-room schoolhouse called Streby Schoolhouse in Streby, WV. That experience shaped her into a lifelong learner and instilled in her a value for community and simplicity.  She continued her education at Petersburg High School.

As a young woman, Polly’s passion for the natural world blossomed. She found great joy in gardening and planting flowers, her hands often deep in the earth, nurturing life with every seed she sowed. Polly enjoyed helping her relatives with greenhouses. It was a testament to her love for growth, both in the gardens she tended and in the lives of the people around her. She was a woman of immense warmth and generosity. Her thoughtful gestures, whether a shared meal or a simple, heartfelt compliment, were her way of showing love. 

As we bid farewell to Polly, let us hold fast to the memories and the love she shared, for they are the perennial blooms in the garden of her life’s work.

Polly’s family will receive friends on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 11 AM – 1 PM at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV.  A funeral service will begin at 1 PM in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Maysville Cemetery.
