Eugene "Gene" Cook Obituary

Eugene Allen “Gene” Cook, age 76, of Maysville, WV went to be with the Lord on Wednesday,February 5, 2020 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.

He was born July 5, 1943 in Maysville, West Virginia and was a son of the late Roscoe Cook and Iona (Rohrbaugh) Cook.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Whetzel) Cook in 2013; a special companion, Diane Hedrick; one brother, K. Leon Cook; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Cornell Cook and Linda Hedrick Cook;

Gene is survived by his wife, Karen Sue (Parsons) Berg Cook; one godson, David Cook of Maysville, WV; step daughter, Kim Goldizen and husband Tim of Maysville, WV; two step granddaughters, Felicia Goldizen and Mikayla Goldizen and one step grandson, Josh Goldizen; four brothers, Donald “Whit” Cook of Maysville, WV; Richard and Nancy Cook of Maysville, WV, Carroll and Donna Cook of Fairfax, VA and Darvin and Phyllis Cook of Maysville, WV; one sister, Sharon and Brad Feaster of Maysville, WV; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Although he had no children of his own, he was a Father-Figure to many young people who loved him dearly. 

Gene first attended Streby School at Jordan Run, WV; then Maysville Elementary School and Petersburg High School.  He was a member of the Jordan Run Union Church. He was a construction worker in Washington, DC and later served in the United States Army as a radio operator in Okinawa. He was employed by Armstrong Paving and Allegheny Coal Company. He was a heavy equipment operator for the late Gerald Bosley. He owned his own trucking company and later became a full time farmer. He was a member of North Fork Ruritan Club. He was a member of Streby Hunting Club and Mountaintop Hunting Club and Old Stoney Hunting Club.  He loved the outdoors and was an avid bear hunter.  His passion was bear hunting with his dogs. 

Gene’s family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.

Funeral service will be Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Charles “Chaz” Stoner officiating.  Interment will be in the Maysville Cemetery with Military Honors by the Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454 and West Virginia Army Honor Guard.
