Dora D. (Crites) Allen

Dora Daphine (Crites) Allen, age 96 of Cabins, WV passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at her home.  Dora was born on May 30, 1927 in Maysville, WV and was a daughter of the late Howard Clifton Crites and Ollie Mae (Secrist) Crites.

In addition to her parents, Dora was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh B. Allen on November 15,1994; one son, Hugh Anthony “Hughie” Allen on November 18, 2021; three sisters, Ethel (Crites) Kessel, Betty Crites and infant sister, Mabel Crites; four brothers, Odel “Bud” Crites, Austin “Buck” Crites, Dorsey “Bussy” Crites and infant Paul Crites. Dora was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Dora is survived by two daughters, Donna “Sage” Allen and husband David Brittingham of Pocomoke, MD and Cheryl “Pat” Allen and husband Amos Lewis of Keyser, WV; one son, Mitch Allen of Petersburg, WV; five grandchildren April Hagmeyer, Jason Bunting and wife Marissa, Heather DeHaven and husband Grant, Hugh C. Allen and Raven Allen; six great grandchildren, John “Jack” Hagmeyer, Peyton Hagmeyer, Sloan Bunting, Beckett Bunting, Sydney DeHaven and Ryder DeHaven and several nieces.

Dora was a graduate of Petersburg High School and taught in a one-room school in Grant County.  On May 10, 1947, she married Hugh B. Allen at the age of 19.  Hugh and Dora owned Allen’s General Store and Allen’s Mobile Village in Cabins, WV where Hugh was the Postmaster. Dora also was a US Postal employee in Cabins and in Petersburg until her retirement. 

Dora was a devout Christian and the center of love for her family and extended family. Her door was always open and warmly welcomed family and friends. 

Dora's family would like to thank Christina Weese and her nieces, Vickie Crites and Debbie Handley for their diligent care at the end of Dora's life.

Funeral service will be Friday, November 24, 2023 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Landis officiating.  Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.
