David Paul (Dave) Stump, 79, of Petersburg, WV, went to be with his Lord Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at his home.
Dave was born on June 24, 1943 in Harrisonburg, VA. He was the son of the late Clement and Glona (Parsons) Stump. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister and a special “brother”, Randy Stump.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cynthia (Vickie) VanMeter Stump; three daughters, Toni Hedrick and husband Tom of Petersburg, Amanda Fleming and husband Allen of Petersburg, and Paula Gerstell and husband CT of Statesville, NC; as well as three granddaughters, Traci Hedrick Rightsell and husband Paden, Katie Gerstell, and Alyssa Gerstell, one grandson, Andrew (Andy) Fleming, one step-grandson, TJ Hedrick and wife Brandi and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Regina Stump of Litchfield Park, AZ. And his special cat Jeffie.
Dave loved God and his family. He had a lifelong passion for farming. In high school he was a member of FFA. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1961. After graduation he went to Virginia to work until Uncle Sam called. After 2 years in the Army, he returned home and went to work at Allied Paper in Petersburg for 27 years until their closing. Dave then went to work for Tri-County Concrete (Fairfax Materials) as a truck driver. After his retirement he worked with Mallow Farms for seasonal harvests.
Dave never met a stranger. His witty attitude allowed him to make many lifelong friends along his journey. Dave was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need of his help. He was a member of the Gordon Chapel United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Landes Ruritan for over 30 years, where he was a board member for several years and received Ruritan’s highest honor, the Tom Downing Award. Dave was a faithful blood donor giving 17 gallons in his lifetime.
Family will receive friends Thursday, July 21, 2022, from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be Friday, July 22 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor David Webb officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg, WV with Military Honors accorded by Grant County Veterans Honor Guard and West Virginia Army Honor Guard.
