D. Vincent Via Obituary

Deward Vincent “Vinny” Via,  age 91, of Petersburg, WV passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024 at his home. He was born October 6, 1932, in Sibley Hospital in Washington DC.  He is survived by one granddaughter, Beth Carroll of Maine, niece Mary Eunice (Mike) Erikson of Capon Bridge, WV, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois Painter Via, his two daughters Ginny (Wayne) Carroll and Kathy Via, his brother Wayne Via, and his parents, Deward and Eunice Via of McClean VA.

Vinny was a trained carpenter by his dad and took great pride in building his own home. Vinny worked two years as a volunteer for the DC national guard with anti-aircraft guns and enlisted in the army where he received a medical discharge. Vinny worked for the department of the interior with the geological survey for 36 years. He loved his job and if you were able to get him talking about it he would chuckle and say “ it was a fun job and if not for sickness I would still be there.”  During his time with the department of the interior, Vinny would stop by Carnegie Institute and pick up pictures and maps on his way to work and would make edits on those in his spare time in the evening. He worked for Carnegie Institute for 20 years.

Vinny’s life was full of the things he loved. Whether it was fishing with his buddies, working with the geologist and hydrologist at the geological survey, setting up his trains, building and fixing clocks, eating his favorite seafood, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables, feeding and watching the birds, or more importantly loving his family. He would speak fondly of his years growing up with his mother and his father and the family pets. He loved his two daughters and was so proud of what they accomplished in their short lives. He was married for 55 years to the love of his life, Lois.

Vinny has passed on from this life but will be forever remembered in our hearts and our fond memories of the time spent with him. Plant the flower seeds in memory of him.

Funeral service will be Sunday, June 23, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at Lahmansville United Methodist Church with Pastor James Dubbs officiating.  Family will receive friends one hour prior to service.  Interment will follow in the Lahmansville Cemetery.
