D. Leon Schell

  Daniel Leon Schell, age 81 of Petersburg, WV, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at his home in Petersburg.

 Leon was born on April 12, 1943 in Petersburg, WV and was a son of the late Ernest Ellis Schell and Audrey Virginia (Reel) Schell. 

In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Violet (Reel) Crites Schell in 2006; an infant sister, Barbara Ellen Schell; five brothers, Kenneth Schell, Ernest Schell Jr., Richard Schell, Ira Wendell Schell and Warren William Schell; stepson, David B. Crites; two stepdaughters, Marilyn White and Rose Miller and step granddaughter, Danielle Miller.

 Leon is survived by four sisters, Margaret Carr of Winchester, VA, Eleanor Feaster of Petersburg, WV, Alma Schell of Jefferson, GA and Bonnie and husband Randolph Grimes of Spotsylvania, VA; one brother, Robert T. Schell of Bunker Hill, WV and numerous nieces and nephews and one daughter, Lisa Mongold of Moorefield, WV; one step daughter, Blanche Simmons of Petersburg, WV; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

 Leon attended Petersburg High School and he embarked on a career that saw him behind the wheel of a truck, hauling pulpwood and mulch. He was more than just a truck driver, he was a man who helped build and sustain the community with every load he delivered.

Beyond his work, Leon was an avid hunter, a hobby that spoke to his love for the great outdoors. His thoughtful and courageous nature often shone through in his patient pursuit of game, and these qualities were mirrored in his interactions with people.

  A Graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 1:00 PM in the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield, WV with the Rev. Joseph Gerstell.  Interment will follow in the Olivet Cemetery.
