Carl Hipp Obituary

Carl Junior Hipp age 93 of Petersburg, WV passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at his home.  Carl was born on April 17, 1931 in Maysville, WV and was the son of the late Vernis Carl Hipp and Clara (Hanlin) Hipp. 

Carl was a 1948 graduate of Petersburg High School.  He taught school one year in a one room school in Smoke Hole. He worked on the farm and in timber. Later he hauled turkeys and feed before beginning his career with the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources in October 1955 as Fish Hatchery attendant at Spring Run Hatchery. In 1965 he transferred to Ridge Fish Hatchery near Berkeley Springs as Assistant Manager.  There he spent 12 years before moving to Reeds Creek Trout Hatchery as Manager. He spent 17 years there as Manager before retiring in 1994.  He worked a total of 38 years and 9 months for West Virginia DNR in the fish division.  He was a member of Grove Street United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and loved the outdoors especially going to their hunting camp named Bear Wallow Camp which was near his homeplace. 

Carl is survived by his wife of nearly 75 years, Esther L. (Kuykendall) Hipp; two daughters, Brenda Kay Close and husband David of Berkeley Springs, WV and Pamela Jo Hedrick and husband Michael of Franklin, WV; one son, Michael Carl Hipp (Fran) of Maysville, WV; seven grandchildren, Brandy Masters, Rebecca Bowen,  Jeremy Hedrick, Shawn Hevener, Amanda Watson, Kevin Close and Wesley Hedrick; fourteen great grandchildren, Christian Hipp, Makaylah Hipp-Campos, Riley Bowen, twins Noah and Jacob Masters, Islabelle Howke, Kambriah, Bryce and Brielle Watson, Adalyn Hevener, Alaina and Hunter  Hedrick, Tenley and McKenley Hedrick; one sister, Helen Lucille Turner and husband Bruce of Cabins, WV and one brother, Denver Lee Hipp and wife Patsy of Shepherdstown, WV.  Also surviving several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a son, Larry D. Hipp and a daughter, Patricia Carol Hevener George and one sister, Darlene Yvonne Self Dolly.

Carl’s family will receive family and friends on Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 12 – 2 PM  at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  A funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home with the Rev. Jed Metzler Interment will follow at Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville, WV.
