Burl Hays, Jr. age 86, of Petersburg, WV died Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Bellaire Stone Port Assisted Living & Memory Care in Harrisonburg, VA.
Burl was born on June 11, 1935 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma and was the son of the late Burl Hays Sr. and Virginia (Cook) Hays.
In 1955 Burl married Sandra Jane Hooe who preceded him in death in 2015. Also one daughter, Lori Lynn Hays preceded him in death.
Burl is survived by one daughter, Vicki Jo Kopf and husband Peter of Basye, Virginia and five grandchildren, Robert Thomas, Michael Kopf, Alexandra Barger, Caitlin Romano Lowe and Nicholas Romano and thirteen great grandchildren.
Burl served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 in Stuttgart, Germany. He worked for the United States Senate in various capacities and culminated his career as the Superintendent of the United States Senate Document Room.
Burl divided much of his time between working in Washington and on his farm in the Smoke Hole mountains of West Virginia. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and horseman. He hosted many wonderful events on his farm for friends and family. He and his wife Sandra retired to the mountains of West Virginia after their government careers and made Petersburg their home where they enjoyed the outdoor life in their beloved West Virginia mountains. Burl was an active member of the Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454.
Visitation will be from 12:30 – 1:30 PM Sunday, June 5, 2022 at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Military Graveside service will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery with Pastor Larry Hakes and the Grant County Veterans Honor Guard.
