Betty L. (Alt) Smith

 Betty Lou (Alt) Smith, age 85 of Petersburg, WV passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025 at her home. 

Betty was born on January 5, 1940 in Smoke Hole, WV and was a daughter of the late Andrew William Alt and Edna Opal (Kimble) Alt. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Olin F. “Sonny” Smith, Jr. in 2005; three sisters, Opal Alt Coleman, Ester Alt Fisher and Eleanor Alt and one brother, Herbert Alt.  Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Monnie (Smith) Johnson and husband, Greg of Ash, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Tiffany Wooster and husband Jake, Kaitlyn Johnson and significant other Jake; Shelby Maisonneuve and husband Andrew, Gregory Johnson, Jr and significant other Colby; three great grandchildren, Carver Maisonneuve, Layne Maisonneuve and Riley Maisonneuve and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was a 1959 graduate of Petersburg High School. Betty worked at a telephone company in the Washington, DC area and married Olin F. “Sonny” Smith, Jr. in 1960. While in Maryland, Betty was a childcare provider. After their retirement they moved back to West Virginia. Betty was a member of Potomac Valley Baptist Church, Maysville, WV.

Betty’s family will receive friends on Friday, August 1, 2025 from Noon till 1 PM at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. 

Funeral service will begin at 1PM with Pastor Ted Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract, WV.
