On Thursday, September 27th, 2018 our beloved mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Betty Ann Carr Moomau peacefully went home to be with the Lord, and her son Richard. She was born in Warren, PA on May 3, 1934 to parents, Clare Richard Carr, a U.S. Forester, and Ada Jane “Janie” Coffey Carr who preceded her in death. In addition to her son, Richard Cullen Moomau she was also preceded in death by her brother Ronnie Carr and former husband, Henry F. Moomau. Betty will forever be lovingly remembered by daughters, Sarah Jane Moomau and husband, Robert Spanswick of Petersburg, WV; Margaret Ann “Peggy” Moomau Lascaris and husband James “Jimmy”, their sons Teddy, Johnny, and Anthony of Deep Creek Lake, MD; Amy Moomau Nemith and husband Don “Butch”, of Oakland, MD, along with daughter Emily and her husband Dr. Weston “Wiggy” Saunders of Clemmons, NC; Sue Moomau-Foundas and husband John of Potomac Falls, VA; one son Eric Taylor Moomau, and his sons, Jackson and Charlie of Maysville, WV; and great-grandsons Adler and Hutch Saunders of Clemmons, NC.
Betty Ann was a longtime resident of her beloved West Virginia where she lived from two years of age in Richwood, Nicholas County until fourteen years old. Her father was then transferred to Grant County and they made their home in Petersburg, WV where she resided for the remainder of her life with the exception of a few years when her husband was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and attending WVU in Morgantown, WV.
As a young girl, she grew up within the Main Street Methodist Church in Petersburg. She became a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church when she married, and was subsequently elected to the offices of Elder and Trustee. She served the Lord she loved, as a church youth group leader, a member of the choir, and a member of the worship committee and others, for many years.
Betty was first appointed to the position of Grant County Circuit Clerk in February 1989 by Judge Reeves Taylor. She held the position through multiple elections until her retirement on December 31, 2010. She attended to the office with honesty, compassion, and integrity.
She served her community in multiple roles such as Webelos Cub Scout Troop Leader, first female board member of the Potomac Valley Youth Football League, and Grant Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. She was also a director on the board of the Herman Eisner Trust Foundation in Elkins, WV.
Her most notable role was raising her six children. Always beautiful, she lit up every shadow in their lives with her inner strength and unconditional love. She valued family above all else, and strived to make holidays, birthdays, and other gatherings memorable with great food (notably the family’s favorite thirty pound lasagna), laughter, and love. She was truly an amazing mother and role model and remained active in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s lives, right up until her passing.
She was an avid WVU Mountaineer fan and a devoted fan of the many endeavors of her grandchildren to whom she was “MiMi”. She was passionate about their athletic games and other activities, and rarely missed the opportunity to watch them compete or perform. She had a special affinity for the members and coaches of the 2014-2018 PHS wrestling team and their previous participation as youth wrestlers. She rarely missed a match even when it required her to travel long distances and before each one, supplied the team with PB & J sandwiches along with batches of chocolate chip cookies. They lovingly honored her at the “Viking Smash” in 2017 which brought her great joy.
Betty loved the neighborhood and the many children who grew up around her had a special place in her heart, along with her extended family. She loved the beach, especially the Outer Banks of NC and enjoyed soaking up the sun, watching her grandchildren’s antics, and reading books by the seashore. She looked forward to the annual trek over to Ocracoke Island on the Ferry and touring in a golf cart as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren encircled her alongside and on bicycles until the fun ended at the local ice cream parlor. Another highlight of vacation time was playing Trivial Pursuit and a card game called “Hand and Foot” until the wee hours of the night, often littered with piles of laughter.
She spent invaluable time watching her great-grandsons and while infants, her former experience made for the world’s best feeder, burper, reader, and rocker one could imagine. So much love was lavished upon them by their “MiMoo.” She will always be remembered for her dignity, grace, love, and devotion to her family and friends.
The family will welcome visitors from 4:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, October 12th at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV. The funeral service will be held the following day, October 13th at 2:00PM at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ann Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richard C. Moomau Memorial Scholarship Fund at 1045 North Fork Hwy, Petersburg, WV 26847.
