Sherril Shuman Obituary

Sherril Edwin Shuman went to be with his Lord, on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at his home. He was born October 22, 1933 in Core, WV. Sherril was the son of the late Harold Edwin and Margaret Kincaid Shuman. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Hudkins Shuman. Also surviving are one son Brian M Shuman and wife Connie Poling Shuman of Front Royal, VA., and one daughter Kristen Hyer and husband Sascha F Hyer of Englewood, FL. Two grandchildren have been the light of his life, Jacob "Jake" Michael Hyer and Margaret "Maggie" Addison Hyer also of Englewood, FL. He was preceded in death by one sister Roberta Jean Wadsworth, Surviving are two sisters Kay (Roy) Murray, Ann (Barney) Musgrave, one brother, Wayne (Martha) Shuman and many neices and nephews.
Sherril served with the U. S. Army 1950-1953 during the Korean War and was a cryptographer, responsible for sending and receiving sensitive information. He was a member of Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454. While stationed in Japan, he preformed his Army duties, was asked to sing on many occasions and even cut records with Japanese backup singers. He tried out in track for the 1952 Olympics . Following his Army deployment, he attended Fairmont State (College) University on the G I Bill where he set state records as a cross country runner. His first teaching and coaching position was at Cartington, OH,(3 years) followed by Harrisville High School, Harrisville, WV where he taught driver education and coached every sport for 5 years. He returned to Ohio to teach driver education and coach basketball and baseball at Frontier Local High School for the 1968-69 school years. In the fall of 1969, Sherril returned to WV to teach . He taught Drivers Education and took over the reigns as head basketball coach at Petersburg High School, Petersburg WV. He retired from the Grant County School System in 1989. He served as President of the West Virginia Driver Education Association. He was president of the Grant County Association of Retired School Employees and Regional Director of the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees.
Sherril was always busy. For several summers, he worked for the National Forest Service and had many fond memories of the projects completed with students from Grant County. He was an avid gardener. Upon his retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher, was a US Postal Carrier, worked for Allegheny Wood and his all time favorite was working for the WV Dept of Natural Resources stocking fish in WV lakes and streams. His favorite experience was stocking fish in the Blackwater River via helicopter. He loved the outdoors .
Sherril loved music. He performed in musicals at Fairmont State, was a member of the First Baptist Choir and sang with the Valley Gospelaires, sharing God's love, for more than 30 years. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church, Petersburg, WV.
He talked of his childhood memories. How First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt came to Monongahelia County to dedicate work of the CCC . While there, she visited the School where Sherril was a 3rd grader. She told him he was a fine young man but he sure did have some bad buck teeth. His dad was quite the ball player and Sherril always tagged along. He remembers when a team from the
Negro League came to Fairview WV to play ball and he got to meet the famous Sachael Paige, before he became famous. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1953 with Charlie Huggins, the father of WVU Basketball coach Bob Huggins. Although Sherril Shuman couldn't go anywhere in WV that someone didn't know who he was.
Although Sherrils's health deteriorated in the past two years, he "watched" with his eyes closed all WV Basketball and Football games. He was a true Mountaineer.

Family will receive friends on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. ( December 23, 2017) at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rick Bergdoll and friend, Rob Mullet officiating. Interment will follow in South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens with Military Rites by Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454.
