Lura Moomau Obituary
Lura Lee 'Becky' Moomau, 91, of Petersburg, West Virginia, died Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Moomau was born September 07, 1925 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Ralph S. and Della (Law) Beckner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Baker Moomau.
Mrs. Moomau was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and attended Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio after being recruited for the swim/diving team. Subsequently she graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor's degree in Education. At WVU she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Social Sorority and Dolphin synchronized swimming honorary. Following her WVU graduation she taught at the Mountain State Business College. She and her husband moved to Petersburg in 1952. She did teach at Petersburg High School, was the coach of the first boys' and girls' tennis teams in 1976, and proud to have been a charter member and previous president of the PHS Scholarship Fund. She also was a member of Grant County Association of Retired School Employees.
Mrs. Moomau was a member and elder of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church. She had been a Sunday school teacher and was a 60+ year member of her beloved choir.
Surviving are her two sons, George Benjamin Moomau (Joni) of Winchester, VA, and Frederick Beckner Moomau of Alexandria, VA, three grandchildren, Thomas Moomau (Stephanie) of Winchester, VA, Lura Lee Moomau of Portland, OR, and Sarah Elizabeth Moomau of Winchester, VA; and special nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Cardot officiating.
Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, WV.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Petersburg Presbyterian Church, 20 North Main Street, Petersburg, WV 26847 or the PHS Scholarship Fund, 89 Riverview Drive, Petersburg, WV 26847.
