Muriel M. (Kessel) Layton

Muriel Marceil (Kessel) Layton, age 92 of Petersburg, WV passed away Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

Mrs. Layton was born on November 21, 1926 in Hardy County, WV and was a daughter of the late Floyd G. Kessel and Cora (Fitzwater) Kessel.  In addition to her parents, Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon E. Layton on January 29, 2011 and one brother, Rev. Wayne M. Kessel.

Muriel is survived by two sons, Dr. Dennis Layton and wife Eva of Charlotte, NC and Steven Layton of Petersburg, WV; three granddaughters, Dr. Elizabeth Depelteau of Satellite Beach, Florida; Maggie Layton of Jacksonville, Florida  and Yolanda Burney of Mooresville, NC; four great grandchildren, Kylie Depelteau,, Eva Dodson, Isabella Anderson and Cody Depelteau, one sister, Doris Allison of Gainsville, Florida; one brother, Gene A. Kessel of Morgantown, WV.

Mrs. Layton was Valedictorian of Moorefield High School Class of 1943 and graduated from Cathermans Business School in Cumberland, MD.  She later was employed by Farmers Home Administration and retired in 1982 after 36 years of service.  She was an elder and trustee for the Petersburg Presbyterian Church and also served as deacon and secretary and taught Sunday School for several years. 

Friends will be received from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV.  Funeral service will begin at 11 AM Wednesday at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harold Tongen officiating.  Burial will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.
