Genevieve D. (Moreland) Kessel

Genevieve Delores Kessel, age 90, of Scherr, WV passed away on Thursday at Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg, WV.  She was born on November 22, 1927 at Scherr, WV and was a daughter of the late Albert Isaac Moreland and Anna Ruth (Jones) Moreland.

 In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Kessel Sr. on August 9, 2001; an infant great grandson and one step great grandson; nine brothers, Leland, Charles, Glenville “Buck”, Victor, Wayne, Coyd, Dale, Virgil and Loyal “Bing” Moreland; two sisters, Rosalee Kessel and Dorothy Connell.

 She worked for Safeway stores as a young woman in Washington, D.C. and later worked for several years at the Windsor Knit garment factory in Petersburg.  She often said that being the wife of a farmer and mother was the best job she had.

 Mrs. Kessel was of the Brethren faith and a longtime member of the Brick Church of the Brethren in Maysville, WV.  She is fondly remembered, among other things, for her pies and bread without recipes, and her well-stocked cellar from the beautiful gardens she and Bob grew together. 

Mrs. Kessel is survived by two daughters, Delores Rohrbaugh (Darl)  of Scherr, WV and Barbara Henderson (Ben) of Ashland, VA,  three sons, Robert “Tommy” Kessel Jr. (Frances) of Scherr, WV, Danny Kessel (Alta)  of Maysville, WV and Joey  Kessel  (Patricia) of Scherr, WV; ten grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and four step great-great grandchildren; one sister, Yvonne Fawley of Franklin, WV; two brothers, Richard Moreland of Scherr, WV and Donnie Moreland of Elk Garden, WV and many loved nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday 2:00 PM at the Brick Church of the Brethren in Maysville with The Rev. Carroll Junkins officiating.  Family will receive friends from 12 noon till time of service at the church.   She will be laid to rest in the Kessel Family Cemetery immediately following services.
