Mrs. Edith Florence (Georg) Van Meter, age100 of Petersburg, WV died on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Grant Memorial Hospital. She was born in Queens, New York on November 8, 1917, the third of nine children of the late Henry A. Georg and Marie (Meinell) Georg.
She was working in the personnel department at AT&T in Manhattan when she met her future husband, Edwin H. “Ted” Van Meter of Petersburg, WV, who was serving in the Army during World War II. They were married on December 1, 1945, and took up residence in Petersburg, where Mr. Van Meter worked as a letter carrier for many years.
Mrs. Van Meter worked as the bookkeeper for Monarch Mills until her retirement and was a longtime member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed gardening, reading and solving challenging crossword puzzles.
She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1973, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by two daughters, E. Marie Van Meter of Petersburg and Roberta F. Van Meter of Kennesaw, Georgia, one granddaughter, Elizabeth L. Abel, and one great-grandson, Matthew Silver, also of Kennesaw, in addition to numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 11 AM at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harold Tongen officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.
