William Reginald "Bill" Mongold, age 95, of Petersburg, WV departed this life on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.
He was born June 20, 1920 in Dorcas, WV and was the son of the late Hubert Clinton Mongold and Myrtle (Riggleman) Mongold. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lola (Secrist) Mongold on August 5, 2005; four sisters, twin sister, Wilma Rodgers, Evelyn Shobe, Garnet Burley and Sue Schmuck; one brother, John A. Mongold; one niece, Wanda June "Nippy" Kesner and one nephew, Darwin Dale Schmuck.
Bill was an Army veteran of World War II. He was among those that landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was in combat in the following campaigns, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He served with company D-291st Infantry Antitank Division.
He was a lifelong farmer in Dorcas, WV and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Petersburg.
Mr. Mongold is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Ann Sites, Myra Yokum, Frank Rodgers, Reginald Burley, David Mongold and Carol Harriman.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Larry M. Cantu officiating. Interment will follow in the Idleman Cemetery in Scherr, WV with military honors by the WV Veterans Armyj Honor Guard and the Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454.
