Helen Thorne Obituary
Helen Rose Thorne, age 90, of Petersburg, WV passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, WV.
She was born January 26, 1924 in Moorefield, WV and was a daughter of the late Ruben Albert Berry and Eura Velma (Weese) Berry.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Conway C. Thorne on April 7, 2007; one daughter, Regina Thorne Tavener and four sisters, Elsie, June, Jane and Velma and one brother, Paul Berry. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Helen was one of the earliest female business owners in Petersburg. She was owner and operator of the Surplus Center. She also was active in the Annandale and Springfield, VA Surplus Centers. She was a member of the Brake Church of the Brethren, Dorcas, WV.
Mrs. Thorne is survived by two sons, George Albert Thorne of Petersburg, WV and Timothy D. Thorne Sr. and wife Donna of Petersburg, WV; thirteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Lena Thorne of Petersburg, WV and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Saturday 6-8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home
Funeral service will be Sunday 2 p.m. (August 31, 2014) at the Brake Church of the Brethren with Pastor Craig Howard officiating. Interment will follow in the Brake Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
