Haven Hanlin Obituary

Haven Earl Hanlin, aged 93, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 7th at the Grant County Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg, West Virginia. Born in Cumberland, Maryland on September 16, 1922, he was the son of the late Herbert and Alma (Cosner) Hanlin of Mt. Storm, West Virginia. Haven was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Vauda A. Hanlin; two sons, Steve Clifton Hanlin and infant Larry Hanlin; a brother, Rosten Hanlin; and two sisters, Marie Dolly and Mary Smith. Haven was a long-time resident of Mt. Storm, West Virginia.
Haven was a proud World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army. During his tour in the Pacific theater, he was stationed in Papua, New Guinea and the present-day Philippine Islands. Haven had a love for storytelling and never missed an opportunity to share his military experiences and memories. After leaving the service, Haven continued his career as a miner, carpenter, and United States postal worker.
Haven was an avid fisherman, a collector and restorer of antiques, and a fan of serial western novels and television shows. Friends and family fondly remember his humor and love of cooking. Haven was a faithful member of the Potomac Valley Baptist Church in Maysville, West Virginia.
Haven is survived by a son, Terry E. Hanlin and wife Michele of Mt. Storm, WV; two grandsons: Benjamin E. Hanlin and wife Cassandra of Cabins, WV, and Michael J. Hanlin of Mt. Storm, WV; a great-grandson, Joseph E. Hanlin of Cabins, WV; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Hanlin of Woodbridge, VA. Numerous extended family members and close friends are also left to remember Haven, especially Nan and Buddy Kesner and Martha Moyers, all of Petersburg, WV.
According to Haven's wishes, his body will be cremated and no viewing or funeral service will be held. The family and close friends will gather at a later date for a graveside memorial service at the Mt. Storm Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations in memory of Haven to the Safe Harbor Program at Grant County Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg, WV.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Grant County Rehabilitation and Care Center for their expertise and compassionate care during their time with Haven.
