Delmar H. Alt

DELMAR H. ALT

Delmar Harrison Alt, age 73 of Spotsylvania, VA and formerly of Petersburg, WV died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at his home.
He was born June 6, 1936 in Petersburg, WV and was the son of the late Virgil Alt and Della (Ratcliffe) Alt. Also preceded in death by his step father, Louie B. Alt and one brother, Darwood "Johnny" Alt.

Mr. Alt graduated from Petersburg High School in 1956. He served in the United States Army and worked at Fort Myers in Arlington, VA for 26 years.
He loved the outdoors; camping, fishing & hunting and especially enjoyed taking his grandson hunting. He was a man of few words, but was always helping others in need.

Surviving his wife, Alma Jean (Rutherford) Alt

One daughter: Connie VanderHaeghe and husband,David of Spotsylvania, VA

Three grandchildren and one great granddaughter

Half sister: Mary Kay Alt of Riverton, WV

One brother: Darl Alt of Dorcas, WV

Two half brothers: Bobby Alt and wife, Debbie of York, SC
Billy Alt and wife, Elaine of Youngstown, Ohio

Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Tuesday 2:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Rev John Vetter officiating.
Family will receive friends one hour prior to services (from 1-2 p.m.)

Burial will follow with military graveside honors by the Petersburg VFW Post 6454.


 
 

William E. VanMeter

WILLIAM E. "BILL" VanMeter

William Edward "Bill" VanMeter, age 76 of Burlington, WV died Tuesday,
March 2, 2010 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.

He was born April 28, 1933 in Maysville, WV and was the son of the late Claude H. VanMeter and Angie Catherine (Davis) VanMeter. In addition to his parents he was prededed in death by an infant grandson, Russell Allen Dolly; six brothers: Melvin J. VanMeter, Elwood Everett VanMeter and four infant brothers; two infant sisters.

Mr. VanMeter was a mechanic and served in the United States Army. He was Brethren by Faith.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathleen M. (Helmick) VanMeter

One Daughter: Angie K. Sites of Petersburg, WV and fiance Jerry Simmons of
Maysville, WV

One Brother: David and wife Esta VanMeter of Maysville, WV

Four Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (March 6th) at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Landis officiating.

Interment will be in the Maysville Cemetery , Maysville, WV.

RALPH T. KEPLINGER

Ralph Thornton Keplinger, age 71 of Petersburg, WV and formerly of Maysville, WV died Monday, February 22, 2010 at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation in Winchester, VA.

He was born on May 29, 1938 in Maysville, WV and was the son of the late Vernie T. Keplinger and Helen (Evans) Keplinger.

Mr. Keplinger was a timberman and was a caretaker for the late Lysle T. Veach farms. He was brethren by faith.

One daughter: Teresa Keplinger of Maysville, WV

One granddaughter: Ashley Kesner of Petersburg, WV

Two sisters: Irene Smith of Maysville, WV

Interment will be in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV.

Nalda Marie "Nod" Harmison
February 22, 2010

Nalda Marie "Nod" Harmison, age 93 of Petersburg, WV died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010 in the Grant County Nursing Home.

She was born on January 20, 1917 in Medina, WV and was the daughter of the late Herman A. Shutts and Millie (Archer) Shutts. . In addition to her parents, she preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, George G. Harmison on May 5, 1990; a stepmother Ethel Shutts. , a brother, Noel Shutts and a daughter-in-law Sheila (McCabe) Harmison.

Mrs. Harmison graduated from Fairmont State College and received her master's degree from West Virginia University.

She was a retired elementary school teacher having taught for 24 years in Marion County, the West Virginia School for Deaf and Blind at Romney, Hampshire County, and Petersburg Elementary.

Mrs. Harmison was an active member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and kindergarden for several years. She was also a member of the Homemakers Club, Petersburg Garden Club, and Grant County Retired Teachers Association.

Affectionately known as "Nod" she was an avid flower gardener, quilter and bird carver. She was named "Valiant Woman 2009" by Church Women United of Petersburg in recognition of one who has given herself to the Christian faith and the goal of purposes of CWU.

Mrs. Harmison is survived by one daughter, Patricia H. Simmons and husband Donald Simmons of Ridgeley, WV; one son, George G. Harmison II of Silver Spring, MD; two grandchildren, George M. Harmison and Jonathan B. Harmison of Silver Spring, MD; one sister, Artha Jane Pinkerton and husband, Dr. Herman Pinkerton of Abingdon, VA; and four special nieces, Ellen, Susan, Sally and Margie.

Special thanks to the staff of the Grant County Nursing Home for the loving care given to her since her admission on April 30, 2009.

Family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, WV.

Memorial services will be Friday 12 Noon (Feb 26th) at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with Rev. G. Richard Cardot and Rev. Ann W. Harrison officiating.
Interment will be private in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, WV.

Linda Lou Hammond

Linda Lou Hammond, 66, of Petersburg, WV,
departed this life February 22, 2010, in her home,
surrounded by family and friends, after an
extended illness.

She was born March 3, 1943, a daughter of the late Ada
Francis Freeland Snodgrass and step-father William (Bill)
Snodgrass. She was employeed in the garment industry
in Ritchie County,WV, for over 20 years.

She is survived by daughters, Kathy (Kenny) Sellers,
Kimberly Wigal, both of Pennsboro,
WV, Lisa (Dwight) Dodd, of Petersburg,
WV, and Vera (Randy) Delancy, of
Williamstown, WV; sons, Scott Hammond (Erica),
and Steve Hammond, both of Pennsboro; nine
grandchildren, Amanda Sellers (Billy), Jessica Sellers
(Tim), Reva Sellers (Michael), Steven Hammond, Kaitlynne
Hammond, Dalton Wigal, Tiffany, Talyssa, and Trevor Dodd;
one great-grandson, Dustin Wade; grand-dog Kali Delancy;
sisters, Diane Gaskins and Pat Hall (Glenn), her primary
caregivers, of Petersburg, WV; brothers Larry (Louise) Freeland
and Michael (Jackie) Snodgrass, both of Harrisville, WV, and
Dick (Shirley) Freeland, of Petersburg, WV; several
nieces and nephews; and special friend Don Bolyard,
of Petersburg, WV.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home

Funeral Home, Petersburg, WV with Rev. Larry M. Cantu officiating. Interment will be in the
Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV.

Misty Dawn Petrice-Penn
February 20, 2010

Mrs. Misty Dawn Petrice-Penn, of Winston-Salem, NC and formerly of Petersburg, WV passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010 at WFU Baptist Medical Center. She was born May 22, 1978, in Randolph County, WV, to James Edward Petrice, Jr. of Jamestown, NY and Brenda Sue Sites of Belington, WV. She attended Rock Hill Baptist Church and was employed by Waffle House. She was a member of True Riders Car Club and Winston World Wide Records. Previously, Misty lived in Petersburg with her Aunt Wanda Harman-Goff and attended Petersburg Elementary & Petersburg High School for several years. She attended the Memorial Church of the Brethren in Petersburg. She was very active in activities participating in Beauty Pageants, Cheerleader, Color Guard, Band, & Girl Scouts. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Natashia Franklin officiating. Burial followed at the Rock Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Holly Sites, Elkins, WV; great-grandfather, Doan Harman, Onego, WV; and uncle Mark Petrice.
She is survived by her husband, Jacob Penn, III; five children, Samone Lane and Brandon Penn of Winston-Salem; Samantha Lane, Domquimc Petrice and Sammi Lane of West Virginia; mother, Brenda Sites of Belington, WV; father and step-mother, James and Dolly Petrice, Jamestown, NY; maternal grandmother, Maxine Sites; paternal grandparents, James and Betty Petrice, Elkins, WV; father-in-law, Jacob Penn, Jr. and mother-in-law, Donna K. Welch, Winston-Salem, NC; four step-sisters, four step-brothers, two sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
